Let’s talk about decanting. I’m talking about decanting dry goods like crackers, biscuits, and snacks. This is something I’ve done for years and always recommend to my clients.
The main reason? Storage space.
Each week, we buy three or four packets of crackers and similar bits. If I left them in their original packaging, I’d have open bags falling over each other in the cupboard. Not only does it look messy, but it’s also harder to keep track of what we’ve got.
Instead, I decant everything into ribbed glass jars, which I picked up from TK Maxx (they always seem to have good ones!). These jars are tall and slim, which means I can store vertically and save so much shelf space.
Here’s why this works so well for us:
- No more half-eaten, half-open packets spilling everywhere
- Easier to see exactly what we have
- Looks tidy and feels calmer
- Encourages better portion control, we can make three packets last the whole week!
And yes, I know some people like to label their jars but I don’t bother. We’re creatures of habit in this house and tend to stick to the same two or three types of crackers. Right now, we have:
- Plain water biscuits
- Rosemary and sea salt crackers
- Rice crackers
Simple, limited, and enough for what we actually eat.
Ribbed glass is a favourite of mine because:
- It doesn’t show fingerprints or smudges
- It’s easier to grip, especially handy if you’ve got little ones around
- It has that classic, slightly vintage look I love
And honestly, decanting doesn’t just make storage easier and it helps with mindful eating too. By keeping everything visible and in one place, I know what we have, and I’m less likely to overbuy or snack without thinking.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about creating simple systems that support your everyday life.
