How I Shop for Pre-Loved Chairs on eBay

07/2025

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I’m a big fan of buying pre-loved furniture especially chairs. There’s something really satisfying about finding the right piece for your space, knowing it’s had a life before and you’re giving it a second one.

I’ve found some brilliant bits over the years on eBay, including the chair in our bedroom, which people often ask about. It’s a classic example of what I look for: well-proportioned, timeless, and fits perfectly in our space.

So here are a few of my tried-and-tested tips if you’re thinking about buying a secondhand chair (or any furniture, really) online:

1. Know your measurements

Before you even start browsing, measure the space where the chair will go. And I mean really measure it — height, width, and depth. Will it stick out awkwardly? Will the backrest block light? Can you still walk past it without bumping your knee?

I’ve learned that even beautiful pieces can be wrong if the scale’s off. A small room needs something elegant and compact, not chunky and overbearing.

2. Check the seller’s location

I tend to filter my searches to “within 25 miles” of my postcode. This makes things easier for collection, especially if you don’t want to deal with couriers or extra delivery charges. Plus, you often find better deals from sellers looking for a quick pick-up.

3. Look beyond the fabric

Many great quality chairs are structurally sound but might not be to your taste fabric-wise. That’s okay, you can always re-cover or even throw a lovely blanket over them. Focus on the shape and frame first.

The chair in our bedroom, for example, isn’t something I would have bought new but with a quick clean and a throw, it fits our space beautifully and feels like it’s meant to be there.

4. Search by style or keyword

If you have a vision in mind (e.g. “French-style chair” or “mid-century occasional chair”), use that in your search terms. And try a few variations, some sellers aren’t quite sure how to describe what they’re selling, so a little detective work can pay off!

5. Don’t rush

I always say this to my clients: buy slowly. When you’re furnishing a home, especially a smaller one, every piece needs to earn its place. Buying secondhand is more sustainable, yes, but it also helps you be more intentional. If you miss out on something, another gem will come along.

There’s a real joy in creating a home filled with character and meaning, and buying secondhand furniture plays a big part in that for me. It’s not just about the “look,” it’s about creating a space that feels warm, thoughtful, and lived in, without waste or excess.
