Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your home—and your headspace. For many of my older clients, this season brings a gentle nudge to let go of what no longer serves them and make space for what matters now. That doesn’t mean throwing everything out—it means making thoughtful, kind choices for your present and future.
Here are some simple, encouraging spring cleaning tips designed especially for older adults:
1. Start Small
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with just one drawer, one shelf, or one corner. Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes—and stop when it goes off if that’s enough for today. Small wins add up, and they make you feel good!
2. Bless and Release
Many of us hold onto things inherited from parents or grandparents—or belongings from our grown-up children. Ask yourself: Do I need this now? Does it bring me comfort or joy? If not, consider passing it on. Gifting items to grandchildren or other family members is a beautiful way to share your story and create new memories.
3. Create a “Let It Go” Basket
Keep a basket in the hallway or spare room for anything you’re ready to pass on. It might be clothes, books, or bits and bobs you no longer use. Once a week, look through it and decide what to donate, gift, or recycle. It’s a gentle way to stay on top of clutter.
4. Keep It Simple With a Weekly Routine
A daily rhythm can be comforting and motivating. Here’s an easy one to try:
- Monday: Light dusting
- Tuesday: Tidy one cupboard
- Wednesday: Laundry day
- Thursday: Vacuum one room
- Friday: Review your “Let It Go” basket
Having clear, manageable tasks takes away the guesswork and helps you feel in control.
5. Make It Social
Cleaning doesn’t have to be lonely. Chat with a friend or grandchild on the phone or iPad while doing simple chores like washing up or folding clothes. It makes the time pass quicker—and you can keep each other going.
6. Sit to Sort, Stand to Stretch
Sort paperwork or keepsakes at a table where you’re comfortable. Keep boxes or bags nearby labelled: Keep, Donate, Pass On, Recycle. After each session, take a short walk or stretch to keep yourself mobile and energised.
7. You’re Creating Space for What Matters Now
Letting go isn’t about forgetting the past—it’s about making space for the life you’re living today. You’re not just clearing clutter—you’re creating peace, freedom, and room to breathe.
Whether it’s spring or any other time of year, my approach is always gentle, supportive, and tailored to the way you live now. If you’d like help organising your home—or just need a nudge in the right direction—I’m here when you’re ready.
