If you know me, you’ll know I love a car boot sale! There’s something so joyful about giving things a new home—and maybe making a bit of extra cash for a treat (or a spa day!). I recently shared my top tips with Prima Magazine, and I thought I’d pop them here too, with a few extras for good measure…
1. Don’t Price Everything
I know it’s tempting to cover everything in sticky labels, but here’s the thing—people are going to haggle anyway! So save yourself the faff. Do your research, get a good feel for what your things are worth, and go in with some flexible prices in mind. Think: “five items for £1” bundles, or “all baby clothes 50p each.” Keep it simple.
2. Know Your Goal
Are you there to declutter or make top dollar? If it’s about clearing space, don’t cling to what something used to cost. Let it go, let someone else enjoy it, and feel lighter. Trust me—you’ll feel amazing walking away with a few quid and a clearer home.
3. Watch Out for the “Pro Buyers”
They swoop in like seagulls the minute your boot opens! I like to sit in the car for a few minutes when I arrive—engine off, window up. If anyone’s too pushy, I simply say, “I’m not opening up until you all bugger off!” (Cheeky but effective.)
4. Think Before You Shop!
It’s so easy to fall for a little something from the next stall, but remember—you’re here to sell. Unless you’re absolutely sure, hold back. And if the kids are with you, give them a small budget and let them buy one treat. Keeps everyone happy!
5. Choose Your Stock Wisely
You’d be amazed what people will buy—faux flowers, old packaging, even slightly grubby LEGO! But avoid anything too damaged. Would you buy it? If not, pop it in the charity pile. Designer pieces? Hold your ground a little, but be polite. Say, “Would you mind popping back later?” If they really want it, they will!
6. Be Prepared
Get there early, bring plenty of change, bags for customers, and a sign reminding everyone (especially your children!) what you’re saving up for. New lipstick? Weekend away? Let it motivate you—and maybe keep the kids from asking for snacks every five minutes.
7. Let It Go, Lovely
At the end of the day, it’s not just about the money. It’s about moving forward, making space, and giving yourself the gift of a clutter-free home. The memories live in you, not in a dusty box in the garage.
So, are you ready for your next car boot adventure?
Pop your kettle on, get sorting—and maybe I’ll see you out there!
